Fundamentals of Putting

Overview of the Fundamentals of Putting

Some of the great teachers and players in Golf have focused on the fundamentals of the full swing. These are relatively difficult to master and require a great deal of practice and effort. Putting, on the other hand, is a skill that can be relatively easily learned. And with the proper instruction in the fundamentals, most golfers are able to become reasonably competent on the green.

The effect of improving a golfer's putting skills cannot be overestimated. A competent putter not only will be less intimidated on the green but will develop confidence that can carry over to the rest of his/her game, thus making it more enjoyable.

Despite, or perhaps because of, its relatively simple mechanics, however, putting can be a more complex exercise than the full swing. For instance, while putting, we have more time for our minds to interfere with what our bodies want to do naturally. Therefore, if we free up the interference of the mind and allow our body to do what it instinctively wants to do, we will perform more consistently and effectively. And the fundamentals of putting are the tools the PGA professional needs to teach the student to do just that.

Alongside are listed the 12 putting fundamentals. Of course, not all students need to be taught each of them in equal measure. The priority each fundamental is given depends on the student's ability and comprehension, and should be based on an initial interview as well as continuing observation and instruction.

When successful, the benefits of a teacher-student collaboration go beyond the obvious improvements in putting. Improved putting will make the student more likely to seek out the teacher for other instruction, as well as continued tune-ups.
