Pre Shot Routine

About the Pre-shot Routine

“Do you have a pre-shot routine?” we commonly ask in the Frankly Frog Studio, and invariably the answer is “Yes.” That is a great answer.

However, what we normally find when we dig a little deeper and ask the student what exactly he does, is that sometimes he does one thing and at other times he will do something completely different.

The problem is that we all know that we should have a routine. Touring pros have one. Television commentators tell us we should have one. The magazines all refer to one. But we are not quite sure where to start.

Unfortunately the pre-shot routine for many people is a series of physical steps only. They stand in a certain place, take a certain number of practice swings religiously and tweak the bracelet on their left hand before carefully addressing the ball. There is only one problem with all this.

They are not following the mental steps associated with the routine. In fact the entire basis for the routine is to follow a set of consistent mental steps to help the student approach the putt in a systematic fashion.
