Practice Drills: Rhythm

Rhythm

One-Handed Putting

This drill is fabulous for students who need to work on their rhythm. It allows the student to let the putter head do all the work. The very nature of one-handed putting does not allow the student to hit the ball. Rather he uses a smooth pendulum stroke. It is important that the stroke is made with a relaxed but straight arm. The stroke is pivoted about the shoulder axis not the wrist or elbow.

Typically in the Frankly Frog Putting Studio we encourage the students to use their right hand (for right-handed golfers) but if they wish to use their left hand, that’s fine as well.

The student should feel the putter head move back and through unimpeded and feel it flow. Provide feedback when the student does it correctly, but in most cases he can feel when he has done it correctly for himself because it is a flowing stroke and the head seems to float through impact a totally different sensation from his usual stroke, which is most likely a “hit”-style stroke.

The student should practice this drill from various lengths and will find the difference between short and long putts is only the distance he takes the putter back not how hard he hits it because he is not hitting the putter he is stroking it.
