Ideas for Your Business

Increasing Your Income

First, some basic arithmetic. If you give lessons to 100 people a year, how many of those will you be able to sell a dedicated putting lesson to? Think how this can incrementally add to your income. And when you fit them for a putter, you have an opportunity to either adjust their existing putter and/or sell them a new one that will work more effectively for them. So you have additional income yet again.

Consider the following points when you look to grow revenue through putting instruction and putter fitting.

1. Creativity

Be creative in devising ways in which you can package and sell your putting lessons. It could be in the form of short, low-cost tune-ups or lengthy in-depth "makeovers." You need to adjust this to your audience and club members.

2. Underutilized Space

Is there an area in your clubhouse/golf shop that you can utilize for dedicated putting lessons? A place that can be turned into a money-making center when the weather is not conducive to teaching or fitting? Re-purposing underused space can make you a year-round facility for putting, which increases your capacity for business.

3. Group Sessions

Group sessions are an excellent, unintimidating way for students to participate and learn. In addition, they give you the opportunity to “broadcast” your services to a larger group and create new customers.

4. Couples Lessons

We have many couples coming to the Studio for putting lessons, and for the most part these are some of our most successful students. Together they can help each other and understand what it is we are trying to achieve. Offer a lesson for couples and throw in a glass of wine in the clubhouse afterwards. Make the experience appealing beyond the golf course.

On a larger scale, have a “Putt and Pinot” night, at which students get a lesson from you and then they can relax in the clubhouse afterward with friends and a complimentary glass of wine, courtesy of their favorite golf professional. Or take it a step further, and make it not just one glass of wine, but a wine-tasting event. Putting is not so intimidating that the less-skilled golfers will be afraid, and you will appeal to many customers who are interested in fine wine.

5. Custom Putter Sales

At the Studio we customize the putters for all our visitors who come and take a lesson. There is no pressure to purchase a putter, but for those who would like a Frankly Frog, we have a Frog Creation room onsite where we can build and customize a putter for them. The result – 80 percent of people who visit our Studio buy a Frog putter.

Apply this to your business. We can provide uncut Frog putters to you so you can fit to length and grip for your customers. It’s a great way to provide that custom product immediately to your student.

6. Your Ideas

Only you know your members and your club and your prospective students. You know if your club is more on the social side or if it is more serious and traditional. Do they like to play games? Is there a strong women’s group that enjoys doing things together, both on and off the course? What kind of course do you have; do certain putter styles work better than others?

We encourage you to think outside the box and come up with some simple and easy-to-implement ways that you can increase your income.

We all get into a routine and a comfort level where everything seems to work alright, but if you have the courage to try a few new things then you might just find an absolute winner.
